NEXUS — Appleby-in-Westmorland

Office of Deep Archive Liaison

Management of correspondence, fellowship records, and the restricted Archive. The Warden's office reports to this division.

The Office of Deep Archive Liaison, designated NEXUS, is responsible for the management and curation of the Institution’s full archive, including the restricted holdings not accessible through the public-facing system. It also manages fellowship administration, correspondence, and the secure transfer of materials between offices.

NEXUS is based at the Institution’s permanent address in Appleby-in-Westmorland. The physical location of the archive facility is not published. The postal address for correspondence is: The Secretary, The Appleby Institution, Appleby-in-Westmorland, Cumbria.

The Deep Archive

The Deep Archive contains materials that, in the Institution’s assessment, cannot be made available through the standard degree access system without significant preparatory context. Access is by direct invitation from the Warden. The number of individuals who have received such an invitation is not published. The Institution notes that the number is small and that it has decreased over time rather than increased.

The 1247 Document

The most significant item in the Deep Archive is the document catalogued under the date 1247. The catalogue entry notes: Of manufacture, but not of any maker known to this age. The document is accessible in stages from the Second Degree. The final section is available only at the Fourth Degree, following written application to the Secretary. Fellows who have accessed the final section are asked, as a condition of access, not to describe its contents in writing. The Institution does not explain this condition. It notes that no Fellow has violated it.
