The Archive Access Programme: An Update

The Institution’s Archive contains, as of the date of this note, 847 entries. Of these, 203 are accessible at Open Access level. 441 are restricted at various Fellowship degrees. The remainder are classified and not accessible through the Fellowship system at any level.

The Institution releases materials from restricted classifications periodically, when the Warden’s office determines that the material can be responsibly shared and that the original grounds for restriction no longer apply or are outweighed by the benefit of disclosure. This process is not systematic and does not follow a schedule. It follows the Warden’s judgment.

Recent Releases

In the period 2018–2023, the Institution moved the following materials to lower restriction levels:

  • The ORBITAL 1962 observation log (partial), from Fourth Degree to partially public
  • The MERIDIAN Lake Vostok monitoring origins documentation, from Second to Open Access
  • The Tesla correspondence first letter, from Second Degree to Open Access
  • Seventeen station log entries from the pre-digital monitoring period (1930–1970), from various restriction levels to First Degree

What Remains Restricted

The Institution does not publish a list of what remains restricted. The public index notes titles and restriction levels but not contents. Fellows who believe a specific record should be considered for reclassification may write to the Secretary’s office. Such requests are logged. The Institution does not guarantee a response.
